Niagara Regional Police have confirmed the identity of the man killed in a head-on crash on Merritt Road Tuesday.
Police said the victim was 22-year-old Owen Harold of Welland.
They also said the other victim, the driver of the van sent to
hospital, is Bryan Moreau, 56, of Welland.
Emergency personnel were called to the head-on collision around
10 a. m., on the stretch of Merritt Road between Niagara Street and
Highway 406.
Police said Harold was in a 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck headed
east on Merritt Road when he crossed the centre line, striking a
westbound 1997 Chevrolet Astro van driven by Moreau.
Both drivers were pinned in their vehicles and the truck was
engulfed in flames. Harold was pronounced dead on scene and Moreau was
taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Moreau, coworkers confirmed, is the co-owner of the Blue Star restaurant on King Street.
John Plentai, Moreau's business partner, said Moreau is "doing
very good," and will hopefully be leaving the hospital by the end of
the week.
He said Moreau was "very lucky" and received "no major fractures" but did receive pins in his foot.
Police said their investigation is still ongoing and witnesses are asked to contact investigators at 905-735-7811 ext. 5500.
